Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes and one of the leading causes of blindness in patients aged 20–74. DR is estimated to affect one-third of the over 460 million diabetic patients worldwide. As a progressive and vision-threatening condition, its late-stage complications including vitreous haemorrhage, traction retinal detachment, neovascular glaucoma, and vision loss.
