The treatment strategy of iridocyclitis is directed to treat any underlying disease that may be a causal factor for iridocyclitis. Medications in the form of steroids are the mainstay of acute/chronic/recurrent iridocyclitis treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, your doctor may prescribe either steroid eye drops or steroid pills. Steroids in either form only suppress the inflammation by disrupting the normal functioning of the immune system and do not cure the condition.
Following are the different steroid treatment options for uveitis:
- Topical Steroids: These include steroids containing creams, gels, and lotions. They help in reducing inflammation and are commonly termed as steroid creams.
- Periocular Steroids: These are provided in the form of injections and are applied locally around the eye. Periocular injections are used in specific situations, for example, when iridocyclitis cannot be controlled by eye drops alone.
- Intraocular injections: Intraocular injections are an efficient and safe option whenever a high amount of medication needs to be administered. They are recommended when eye drops are ineffective.
- Oral Steroids: Oral steroids are used in those severe cases of iridocyclitis in which drops or injections have failed to provide the needed relief.
- Intravenous Steroids: These steroids are administered in the form of an IV drip. These are useful in extreme situations of iridocyclitis requiring high steroid doses to be administered in a short span of time so as to avoid vision loss.
